Another Dubious Distinction for Houston- World's Widest Freeway

Loading Image...

For what it's worth, we can lay claim to the world's widest freeway: The Katy Freeway at Beltway 8 is 26 lanes across.

Here's how that breaks down: 12 main lanes (six in each direction), eight feeder lanes and six managed lanes. The managed lanes carry mass transit and high-occupancy vehicles during peak hours and are made available to single-occupancy vehicles for a toll fee during off-peak periods.

That 26-lane expanse earned the Katy a spot in Business Insider's post, "11 Wild Highways to Drive Before You Die."

Wow. It could also be in the list of Wild Highways That Will Cause You to Die. Despite the width the traffic is still unbelievable

They are adding a couple new lanes soon to handle increased volume also.

But not with new concrete. The plan is to narrow the lanes down to add additional lanes - and accidents.

Katy Frwy being Houston's World's Widest Frwy is absolutely over! Since construction on the West Loop Frwy north of the Katy Frwy is done, the West Loop Frwy is the Houston's New World's Widest Frwy with 28 lns, right by Hempstead Rd!

@Stealth83 : While with the West Loop Frwy, south of the Katy Frwy, their urging shouler lns to become additional lns! That'll raise lanes from 4 to 6 lns, which will be wider than the frwy lns of the Katy Frwy!!

Where is west loop freeway? I thought west loop was 610. Is it by the galleria where the i10 and 290 convergence is? That section is crazy.

@Stealth83 : The West Loop is just that, the West section of 610. It runs from Bellfort (nearly) to 290. The bends explain the names. N, S, E, and W. I just love, (cough), that every single street in Houston seems to have at least 2 names. Try to explain to someone out of state what West Loop South means. But, it makes perfect sense.

Well, you usually can't on the W Loop, lol. I used to live in a house right in the corner where it connects to 69/59, that big 3-sided billboard would cast a shadow on it in the evening.
