One step at a time: How a Missouri City couple lost 45 pounds walking through the pandemic
As the world seemed to come to a halt during the coronavirus pandemic, and people stayed indoors, Cedric Pierson found an opportunity to reclaim his health.

"COVID-19 was a bad time for everyone, but it's a good time to reflect," said Cedric Pierson, who lives in Missouri City with his wife, Fior Pierson.

Cedric had gained weight; his blood pressure was high. He was having heart problems and not managing his Type 2 diabetes. It didn't happen all at once; all of these problems accrued over time.

"You think you're healthy, but you're not paying attention to the signs," Cedric said. "All of (a) sudden, you come to the realization. I knew I needed to get in shape right away."

Cedric is a native Houstonian; Fior is from the Dominican Republic. They met when both riding the same bus to the University of Houston. He was enrolled in college, and she was taking English as a second language classes (ESL).

"That was 40 years ago," Fior said.
They now have two adult daughters, Ingrid Little and Patricia Lee, and five grandchildren.

When Cedric decided to focus on his health, he turned to Fior to join him.

"I was maybe 70 pounds overweight and had other issues - high cholesterol, high blood pressure, all of that," Fior said.

In March, they began walking together every morning. Often Fior motivates her husband to hit the pavement.

"She's the driving force," Cedric said. "It will be 6 in the morning."

"And we're out," Fior said. "Let's go."

At first, they walked a mile. Now, they are up to 4 or 5 miles a day.

By July, Cedric challenged friends on social media to improve their health too. "Just get out and walk," he said. "Just start with something simple."

Not only did he find support online but a number of friends accepted his challenge.

The Piersons also joined Herbalife Nutrition, adding the brand's shakes to their nutrition plan.

"Before, we used to eat just to eat," Pierson said. "Nutrition is the biggest part. You can walk, walk, walk, but if you're not eating right, nothing will change."

Fior used to cook mostly traditional Caribbean dishes. "It's lots of rice, lots of beans," she said.

There were too many starches for her blood sugar, Cedric explained.

"It wasn't good, so we started to cut back," he said. "We needed to be on a better nutrition plan. Eat your food, but eat right. Eat colorful meals. We're still enjoying food."

The result is that both Piersons are losing weight; at the same time they've seen other numbers drop during visits to the doctor's office.

"Everything is moving in the right direction," Cedric said. "We're just aiming for a better life and better health."

Fior has lost 25 pounds, and her husband dropped 20 pounds. Each previously weighed about 200 pounds.

"I feel much, much better," Fior said. "I used to have problems with pain in my legs. Now I feel the difference. It's a victory."

She even has started running.

On Sundays, the Piersons often walk together as a family - with their daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren - since they all live in the same neighborhood. They also work out together in their garage gyms.

They are able to stay safe and exercise close to home. "The whole family is in on this plan," Cedric said.

Ingrid Little said her mother was her inspiration to start exercising more during the pandemic - and the two often walk together.

"It's just so motivating to see her," Little said. "She's not only taking the time to work out. She's taking it to the max."

Little was also surprised to see her father accept a push-up challenge on social media. For 25 days, he did 25 push-ups and posted it live on Facebook.

"To take the time to do this and stick with it is very commendable," Little said. "I'm super proud of both of them."

Fior and Cedric hope to inspire more people as well, asking their friends to get on board too.

"Get up and do something today," Cedric said. "We want to help people get healthy. Now is the time."

Pierson still regularly posts about his journey. "Sometimes, I show pictures of just my feet walking," he said. "The next thing you know, you see someone else post that they're walking too. It feels good to know that people are taking care of themselves."

He only wishes he had embarked on this path sooner. "It's something I should have done 10 or 15 years ago," he said. "I urge everybody to take 30 minutes or an hour a day to exercise."

Cedric also encourages everyone to go to their regular doctors' check-ups and keep a close eye on their hearts, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.

One of the best parts of his recent weight loss was having a partner in crime.

"It just feels good to look at Fior and what she's done," Cedric said. "I'm amazed. Seeing her get up and say I'm going to do this, it made me stronger."

"Now we're on the right track for a successful life," Fior added.

Together, they're happier and healthier.

"We're looking good," Fior said.

"I think she's still the sexiest woman alive," her husband said. "I'd get back on that 65-Bissonnet bus with her again."

Keep up the great work exercising and eating healthy. Maybe you don't need to lose weight after all.
